Small Batch 'The Skin Project' 2022
100% Verdelho. Fermented on skins for two weeks. Spicy ginger and oolong overlay juicy tropical fruits.
GROWING & MAKING: Margaret River Verdelho grown by Ben Johnson at his great little Cowaramup vineyard. This is what is known as an ‘orange wine’ or ‘skin contact wine’ and is basically white grapes that are made as if they’re a red wine. White wine is made by fermenting juice that has been pressed and separated from its skins, but here the skins were left with the fermenting juice for two weeks. As a result, colour (the slight orange hue), tannin (that dryness on the finish) and interesting flavours (think oolong, ginger and camomile) are added to the wine. Verdelho by nature has high acid (which keeps the wine crisp and fresh) and plenty of juicy, tropical fruit flavours (that make it delicious). This is interesting and textural, but it’s also super fruity and yum.
Unfined, unfiltered; minimal mucking about. Vegan.
